Ekalopse: A Legacy in 2021

"Dear Fans,

We apologise for disappearing. As with most things in life, people move on. Ekalopse did just this.  I (Pupendai) have gone on to make more music under a new secret name, trying new avenues and certainly improving (solo). The General decided to stay in the US. He has very close friends and family there. The virus gave him good reason to stick it there. We have no hard feelings for each other.

S. Steps has moved on, I think he is in the Ukraine working with Bluey Fashoo (A new up and comer in the music world). We did work a bit together, as did myself and the General before all this but nothing was released.

Nothing worth sharing.

So unfortunately, we must admit this is our break up announcement. There will be no more music from Ekalopse. We cannot foresee any rereleases of past tunes but I'll say never say never on that one.

I'd like to thank The General, for being a genius and the best friend I ever had. What an amazing ghostly guy. You are a hero to me. I know my music was awful but you stood by all the time and always supported me. There were some good moments.

Thank you to the fans who came to our shows. You were heroes too. We hope you go and find your next adventures.

Thank you for listening to us all the way back in the 'Fruit Encyklopedia' days and all the way through till 2017.

Here is a short list of some of our favourite songs:

  • Comfortable
  • Crayolalola
  • Never Be Happy
  • You don't need to be dead
  • Same for the Girl
  • Escape to the Movies

  • Kidding
  • 2000s
  • Soul to a brick wall

Bye everyone x"

Secret music project on the side.

Hi Lopsyians (I know no one uses that term). We wanted to let you know that we'll be releasing a full new album under a new name and under false identities.
It will be titled Artificial Colours and include 10 tracks (Including 3 interludes).
Pupendai is going under the boring false name 'Nathan'. We're just trying something else out, so it's a secret for the fans.

That will make in total 10 albums + one EP. Though will not be including Artificial Colours on this blog, it is a beast in it's own right.

Pupendai: "It's complicated to explain but I basically went under the name 'Nathan' and got an actor to mime my words in some vids. It's important to me that my identity is under due to the negative impact my life has had on my career. Since I murdered Mr. Bindy and was in jail and all that, no matter how our music sounds the listener base has always shrunk. So it was important to me to get a fresh start and see if the finishing result was commerically more successful."

The General: "This is more of a Pupendai project with his friend Daniel, a brass master himself. But I certainly had some input here and there."

Release date soon.

No Birds

Yes, that is us dressed up as birds. Our manager thought it would be the best thing to advertise our new collection of songs (Note, we don't like to say Album because we did not put enough work into it to be able to call it an album).
The collection is called No Birds. Don't ask why.

Here is the cover.

As you can see, The General loved being dressed as a bird. I appear to be very confused about it all. I know what a lot of you are probably thinking, Where is our other musician, Simon S. Steps??? Well he was sick that day, bird flu. I dunno.
But he is certainly on the record so don't you worry those pretty little faces.

Oh well, let's tell you about the album anyway.

Well it certainly has less of a theme than the last few. It also has more songs than any album we've released before I think??? Will have to check the wiki for that.
16 tracks though ay!? Whatever.

1. Feathers and Glee
This was inspired by fake news and university students.

2. Lighthouse
We were listening to a lot of Beatles and they make lots of skitter skatter noises as we eat them and that's what inspired this seaside track. Originally the song ended with a boat crashing, but i thought that ruined the love story and also seemed pretty predictable for us. So decided to keep it happy.

3. You don't need to be dead
Was feeling very down when I came into the studio this day. Kept shouting at the General whenever he played something good. Then as soon as I began to cry to myself an icecream van drove past and I just had to stick the song in there. We really really like this one though.

4. Again
This one pretty much just came from experimenting with sounds. Making music from something a bit more absurd than we have before. But we ended up just making another really depressing song but this time sung by Mr. Blobby. I really like the chorus actually, completley written by The General. What a guy. So nice to have him back from the US. Some nice synths from S.Steps as well. You can tell we have brought in a more electronic sound his he came on the scene.

5. Crayolalola
It's so loud! So powerful! One our faves. A story about losing a love, but not just any love! A creative, intelligent, brilliant love! And also about how moving on, how difficult that can be. We still not found her by the way. She's not even behind the sofa.

6. Forgettable
Here is one that goes all over the place. We do bring in the slightly heavy and traditional instruments here. Hard to say much about this one. It's crazy but it was mostly jamming! But in all seriousness. Both myself and us as a band, we do feel forgettable sometimes... all the time. Forget my face, forget my life, forget my feelings. It's sad. But it's life! I'm just a dog.

7. Comfortable
Another one of our faves! It's kind of half relaxing and half sad and scary. I'm no good at maths. I also mention Taylor Swift in this one.. due to her obsession with love/breakup songs. We do the same you know, they just creepier. Taylor and I are pretty much the same. Also i got high on mocha so I was trying to replicate that experience in music. I really love the 'loooooveeeeeeee' bit. That was all me you know. Kind of makes me sad, this one.

8. Dumb
I was not sure if I should put this one on. Musically it's very simple, and all the lyrics are all improvised. But for whatever reason we liked the simplistic desperateness of my words. Yeah, that's what the band told me anyway. To me it's a filler. And another depressing one.

9. Social Anxiety
This was all S.Steps and The General. S.Steps had experienced problematic Social Anxiety in his earlier years so suggested we make this song. He also wrote most of the lyrics!! Well done chap I say. I did suggest he sing as well but he was too shy. S.Steps wrong the depressing bits and The General wrote the chirpy bits. The bell sound is the sound of the bus bell.. caus wanna get off you know.

10. Short Boat Song
The name kind of explains it. We went out on a boat and it was actually really nice.

11. Jean Shirt
Bringing out the more acoustic instruments for this one. This one is kind of about obsession with social living. Which can be good in small doses. But it is really healthy to stay away from people sometimes.

12. Today's Date Is
This one I wrote after a holiday I had by myself. It's just about regretting not being something better by now.. in our lives and careers. I was quite content with being a nobody until I saw someone from the past pop up doing what they love on tv. It broke me a little.

13. Never Be Happy
While this is another sad look at the world from Ekalopse.. I do think it is one of our finest produced songs. Being an adult is not great, kids are right to be curious of the future.

14. Discolour
This is a instrumental track we just love. We were jamming and General was playing all dem beats and then brought some horns in and we had such a nice track. In the end we realised any of my awful words may ruin such a pretty track.

15. mm dancing
This is literally about dancing and nothing else.

16. Goodbye
This one (if i was a fan) would say this one sounds like it's come straight off Reality Therapy! But in the same vein as 'you don't need to be dead' it was made in times of depression.

LISTEN NOW!

Please don't listen at all.

-----------------------------------------

Here are some other pictures from the photo shoot. I'm not sure why they look they are on pieces of paper but hey! weird lighting, he was a cheapo photographer no offence.

Yes, they brought a real pelican into the studio.
The General came up from behind me and made me jump!! Actually, that's why i have no more beard in the other pictures, it all just shot out of my face in shock. Closest shave i've ever had.
The General liked dressing up. This was the head mask that ended up not making the final cover.
Photographer started getting a bit creepy here, did not know what was going on! I could sue for this one i reckon.. i dunno. i'm tired.
Oh yeah of course they got a picture of me sick to death of wearing those stupid costumes.

Never Be Happy

Check out our new track 'Never Be Happy'.

Lyrics

Always standing on cliff tops
am I too tired now?

and I'll never be happy
i'll never manage
never be happy
settle for the truth x2

She wants to know about being older
Is it worth dying as a soldier?
No

love is nothing when you're older
you're feeling colder and lost
and i don't share all the content that the big spends bath in

and don't care, if i dare i'll share the pain
the tortured feel
so i sit and i scream at the clock. it won't it stop
why is the grass always greener in heaven?

Always standing on cliff tops
am I too tired now?

and I'll never be happy
i'll never manage
never be happy
settle for the truth x2

I really want a pizza

Ekalopse new interview!

It was only short, someone found it in the new TIME magazine just after the four page spread about Donald Trump.

So what's next for Ekalopse, Pupendai?

"Well Lucy. Can I call you Lucy?"

Sure

"Well Lucy, we're actually not doing anything at the moment. This is actually the longest break we've ever had from music. As you will see from our Soundcloud we still have some very recent material that was released not too long ago."

So no new album?

"Well, those songs are building up to an album, but ultimately we have no plans to work on and finish another album. Unfortunately, Fun but Dead was a bit of a flop for us and so we are taking it real chilled now. The next album is going to be called 'When I forget the Sky' but as I say, we have no plans on finishing it just yet. We'll get back to you on that."

Can you tell me about how you are approaching music differently now than when you started?

"Yeah. Well, in the beginning we just played rubbish in Mr. Bindy's garage and ya know, it was fun. It was very relaxed. But then fame hit us and I murdered Mr. Bindy.......... umm.. ergh yeah I don't like to talk about that. But anyway, after all that calmed down a bit it was just us 2 (The General and Pupendai) working on experimenting with sound and with different musicians. After all those years though I think we may have returned to those garage days. IF we want to make something that sounds well thought out and structures we'll do that, if we want to make a crappy tune with crappy lyrics that matches our feeling of the day then why the **** not?"

Thank you Pupendai, I look forward to hearing from you soon.

"Oh. Before you go. Fun but Dead is definately the most well structured and thought out album of ours! So go have a listen! Our newer stuff is way lazy."

9 Albums! Time for a break.

The reason our album 'OK, WE WILL' was called 'OK, WE WILL' was because it was the answer to the question 'Can you stop making music now?'
Turns out, it was not in our nature to just STOP. So we released a new album, Fun but Dead. Now, we have 9 albums! It is about time we stop guys.

The General: "Hey people. I have been getting a lot of messages and emails questioning how much involvement I've had on the album. While I think it is cruel of you to just dismiss Pupendai's work, I am also flattered. But I can assure all of you that I had heavy input on the finished album. My fave songs are Gossip Shops and Hollywood Hospital. Thanks!

Pupendai: Glad I never released any solo stuff..... with this sort of backlash. Thanks guys!!

The General: Also got some emails asking about the lyrics of Hollywood Hospital. Seems like it has had a bit of an impact on people. Care to talk about the lyrics mate?

Pupendai: Nope.

The General: Alright. Last question was how has it been working with Simon Stairs Steps and why has he not left or died yet?

Pupendai: I'm not cursed! I murdered the first one so it can't be a curse. Anyway, it has been great. For the most part Simon seems to get ghostpop and Ekalopse in general.

The General: I certainly agree. While mop was excellent, Simon knows how to keep some energy throughout a song. Plus, he's been rather good at transitioning across from the depressing sound of Ok we will to Fun but dead.

Simon (Stairs Steps): I do feel like I am part of Ekalopse now. What a feeling. Both guys are really talented, well mainly The General, but Pupendai is very enthusiastic. His lyrics are alright too. No idea what he's talking about most of the time though.

Pupendai: The lyrics are still pretty sad on this album but I try and be somewhat optimistic. I was doing ok until I just fell apart and wrote Hollywood Hospital and Keep Telling Me.
The full album is 39 minutes 50. Which is ever so slightly shorter than the last ones but there is plenty to enjoy in there.

The General: Next email asks 'What was it like working with DJ Bralant again?'

Pupendai: Well, believe it or not, we've actually worked on 3 songs with him now. First one was James Bralant you're ok..., then it was Light the Way (Instrumental for a song originally about him). Lastly, James Bralant doesn't even want to think about it. This was certainly his best work. His ego was on top form this time around. The song is short and sweet.

DJ Bralant: I love working with Ekalopse. They seem to be the only ones that love me.

The General: 'Which too songs best say 'fun but dead' for you guys?' ummm good question. Maybe Never Gonna Change and Hollywood Hospital?

Pupendai: No idea

Simon (Stairs Steps): Escape to the Movies and Gossip Shops?

The General: Thanks everyone for sending in their questions. We hope you enjoy our album. We'll keep you updated on tours and any new music. I know Pupendai does seem to always fall back to the keyboard but I think it's certainly the right time for us to take a break. So I will not be participating in any future Ekalopse music RIGHT now. Maybe in the future.

Pupendai: And we will wait. I won't ever release an album without The General. Without him, we'd just be depressinkalopse. No one wants that. It's always exciting was jazz stuff he's been up to where ever he travels to. But yeah, The General worked with me while i was in jail, I'll never leave him. We are Ekalopse forever guys. Friends stick together, for Mr. Bindy.

The General: Aww, sweet. Rest in peace Mr. Bindy.

Simon (Stairs Steps): I never met the guy but he was obviously very talented and a good friend to you guys. It's a shame he didn't live long enough to work with you again. But I suppose if he was not dead, i'd be jobless! Silver lining...

Pupendai: Too soon Steps.

Simon (Stairs Steps): Sorry Pup.

The General: OH, before we go. I'd like to just say thanks to Erin for performing on our song Kidding. It mainly an experimental song. We just wanted to see how long we could go while remaining interesting. Erin was excellent.

Pupendai: She was marvelous.

The General: Bye everyone!

Pupendai: Bye!! Please put a little x next to my Bye! so it like i am kissing my fans x hopefully that not creepy.
